The Historic Vehicle Society of
Ontario began in the early 1950s in the small industrial town
of Windsor Ontario. Before it's official inception, it started
as a dream of one man, Alex Horen.
Alex moved to Windsor in 1951 from Toronto with
his wife Mildred at his side. Moving to the automotive capital
of Canada soon sparked Alex's interest in vintage cars and he
noticed that there seemed to be others who shared the same
passion in classic cars as he did.
After buying a used 1917 Chevrolet
Touring car for $50, he caught what he now calls
O.C.B. or Old Car Bug. This "bug" spurred him on to buying more
classic cars and meeting other historic vehicle buffs
who expressed interested in his idea of forming an old car
club in Windsor Ontario.

Automobile Club of Windsor was held on Sunday October 3rd,
1954. While the meeting was only attended by just
eight members at the time, the club quickly outgrew
several locations as well as name changes until it blossomed as
the Historic Vehicle Society of Ontario in Heritage Village,
Essex Ontario as it's known today.
From finding buyers for the donated vehicles
displayed at the old car museum to securing the famous 5588
locomotive and other historic vehicles that symbolized the
growth and spirit of Windsor Ontario, Alex Horen was always at
the forefront leading the way.
